PT Newmont Minahasa Marine Habitat Enhancement Program Photos.
Unsustainable fishing practices (principally poisoning and bombing) have resulted in degradation of reefs in the coastal region of North Sulawesi. Harvesting of mangroves for construction materials has also resulted in significant degradation of this important fish nursery and feeding habitat. Newmont Mining Corporation operates the Minahasa Gold Mine in North Sulawesi, Republic of Indonesia. Working with local communities and partners, Newmont has developed and is currently implementing the Marine Habitat Enhancement Program as a part of the Integrated Sustainable Development Program for the local area. Two key elements of this program are the Reef Ball (development of artificial reefs) and Mangrove Rehabilitation projects. The Reef Ball Project is the largest of its kind conducted by the private sector to date. These projects are being conducted in conjunction with micro-financing and training programs for local fishermen and women and other coastal conservation programs such as the Water Police and the Coastal Clean-up programs.

Client: Location: Project: TRAIN LOCAL VILLAGERS ON REEF BALL CONSTRUCTION TO PROVIDE A SOURCE OF INCOME FOR THEM AND ALSO ENHANCEMENT OF LOCAL MARINE AREAS. IT IS A WAY FOR NEWMONT TO HELP THE COMMUNITY AND PROVIDE EXPERTISE THEY CAN USE ONCE THE MINE CLOSES, WHICH WILL BE IN 3-5 YEARS. BARGE Looks as though we may get a landing craft. We can put a crane or mobile crane on it no problem. I don't think they are too happy about letting the cable down into the seawater though and we don't have a pelican hook. One option is to add some older cable to the winch. Or sling a platform that we lower until the PB is half submerged and then tip and slide PB off. what are your thoughts and what is the great technique that you mentioned? Modules will be dropping 10-20m to a sandy bottom.

Jerry Kinslow has been following the Reef Balls put down since 1998 at Minahasa and his photos show an incredible progression from new Reef Balls to a natural coral reef. These pictures prove that coral reef restoration is possible when water quality is good. This folder is highly recommended for browsing.

SULAWESI North Sulawesi Environmental Photography Course In response to a rising wave of digital 'bottom trawlers', Aqua-Firma has created what we consider to be an environmentally conscious photography course, with a 'no-touch' philosophy. The course is held at two locations in one of the World's most biologically diverse marine environments. The award winning Bunaken Marine Park , Manado, offers pristine reefs and drop off's, whilst in strong contrast, the black volcanic sands of the Lembeh Strait are considered home to the best dive sites in the World for macro photography. The course is led by photographic professionals and provides opportunities to shoot at several conservation projects including Reef balls
