Joe Halusky Reef
F lagler County constructed its eighth artificial reef in June, dropping 109 reef balls into the sea, creating a valuable marine habitat and recreational opportunities for area fisherman and divers. The reef was named after Joe Halusky who spent many years assisting the county in the SeaGrant program. Funding for the project was provided by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service?s Federal Aid in Sport Fish Restoration Program. The St. Augustine Port, Waterway and Beach District, contributed matching funding for theproject, totaling $10,000. Note the double stacking of the Reef Balls was a unique happening as these Reef Balls were deployed just by tossing them off a barge. The Reef Ball on top just landed in exactly the right spot and did not even break the Reef Ball below it!
