Lanka Princess Hotel Reef Ball Project

Künstliche Riffe
Fast überall vor den Küsten Sri Lankas wurde in der Vergangenheit Raubbau an den Korallen-Riffen betrieben, auch in Beruwala. Heute ist das zwar verboten, doch bis sich auf natürlichem Wege neue Riffe gebildet haben, dauert es Jahrhunderte. Michael Weyland, Direktor des Lanka Princess Hotels in Beruwala, hat daher eine Initiative für künstliche Riffe gestartet. Die Basis dafür könnten Schiffs-Wracks oder auch so genannte Reef Balls sein: "Man kann sich das wie Kugeln vorstellen wie ein Schweizer Käse, also sehr stark durchlöchert. Es ist erstaunlich, wie schnell dann die kleinen Mikro-Organismen sich da ansiedeln."
Neben dem Tsunami-Schutz verspricht sich Michael Weyland davon auch eine Attraktion für Tauch-Touristen.
