Maldive Islands Reef Ball Projects and Photos
In 1997 and 1998 there was a mass coral bleaching event in the Maldives. Since then, Maldivians have turned to Reef Balls to help in coral restoration efforts. Lead by the Four Seasons Resort, several projects have been realized and many more are being considered. The Boxing Day Tsunami impacted the Maldives and Reef Ball Foundation is working to obtain funding to further assist in Maldivian reef restoration efforts. Generally the experiment is quite positive. 10 Reef balls will be located on the island as breacking waves in a channel with a very strong corrent and powerfull waves for test the stability 2 Reef balls will be transported and positioned on a diving spot at 20-25 meters deep and monitored by a scuba diving center for coral grow 2 Reef balls are designed for a snorkelling area 3-4 meters deep." We have made 14 elements for PADI Maldives in Thulhagiri Island Resort. All made on the beach without wooden base. No breakage. Use of water-sugar was successful for the finishing of the concrete. Attached are some pics of the site. The diving school boys have set the balls in the lagoon on 2 mt. dept for curing
