In May 1999, 105 Reef Balls were placed in groups of three on the south end of the Charlotte Harbor Reef by the Charlotte Harbor Reef Association, volunteers from the Reef Ball Foundation and Marine Contracting Group.
3 Reef Balls were placed at Gilcrest Park.

This Reef Ball proejct inved placing artificialr juvenile fish habitat called "reef balls" at existing natural reefs, under major fishing piers, a nature park fishing dock and ninety (90) other docks located in Charlotte Harbor. Support was also given to this project from volunteers, The Charlotte Harbor National Estuary Program and was led by of Jerry Jenson.
