The volunteers came up with a back saving device to float the reef ball mangrove pots into their final resting position on the nursery bed. By controling the water level of the nursery, a temporary flood stage was created to allow easy floating into place. After all the mangroves are in place, the nursery water levels will be returned to the lower level required for plant germination and growth.

Local assistance as the nursery fills up.

benpicst039 This was before any plants were in the nursery as we loaded the pallets into the nursery by just dumping the off the back of the pick up truck and letting them float until we positioned them where we wanted them.

The "RV Monkey"...the volunteer team's affectionate name for the deployment raft was created at the DOE from scrape parts. The team came up with the idea after the first day when they realized hand movement of the pots was going to be too much work.

kcmangrove2picst081 For building the nursery, we also assisted our movements by having a string of pallets hooked together by a long rope and anchored on each end. This was helpful because walking in the mud takes alot of energy.
